How to Get Started in a Career in Architectural Photography
Are you curious if architecture photography is for you? Most photographers, for whom photography is a passion, want to learn everything they can about their craft! If you’re interested in taking these types of images, we will teach you everything you need to know to get started.
What is Architecture Photography?
Architecture photography is not pictures of people and natural settings alone when it comes to architecture photography, buildings, and structures matter.
It is a form of photography which focuses on buildings, interiors and exteriors, monuments, and all images which showcase structures and aesthetics. Architecture photographers find beauty in buildings and showcase that in breathtaking ways.
How to Shoot Architecture Focused Photographs
Time Management
Taking pictures of buildings and structures can be more time consuming than other single subject portrait shoots. This is because buildings take time to walk around and explore. You may have to contend with lighting and shadow issues or vary the time of day you shoot due to crowd issues. You’ll also likely spend additional time determining the best angles and perspectives.
Quality
Quality cannot be overlooked in place of quantity. Although you do want to try for multiple photographs, you must plan your shots. If you are shooting an image of a skyscraper or otherwise tall building, and shoot straight, you’ll only see part of the exterior. Go low and shoot high, or high and shoot low. Consider using a low ISO and use editing tools after you capture images in “Raw”.
Don’t Forget Your Lenses!
Don’t bring only one lens. Bring (at least!) a 2+, and some filters, while you’re at it. This will allow you to create a variety of images all taken from the same location and incorporate different visuals and structures you see nearby.
Camera Equipment
According to ExpertPhotography.com, many architecture photographers use specialized equipment to help “minimize parallax errors” common to angled images of structures. This equipment could include a tilt, shift lens, tripod, etc.
Interior or Exterior
You don’t have to choose one or the other (taking images of both are fine), but many people find a special appreciation for interior or exterior photographs. If you’re shooting indoors, you will need to consider lighting and whether or not a flash is allowed (in some cases flash is not allowed in museums, near works of art, etc.) or called for, or if you can incorporate natural light (from a skylight or window, etc.).
If you shoot architecture photography outside, you will survey the area for the most attractive vantage point and outdoor landscaping, etc. This will give you the ability to fuse an appreciation of natural and human-made creations.
Even when photography is a professional career or your field of worth, it usually originated as a passion. That is why so many photographers are upset and dismayed to learn their photography has been stolen by online thieves. Online thieves may intentionally steal your work and use it for their business or company, or they may do it without even thinking twice.
It doesn’t matter whether copyright theft was intentional; it matters that you stop it! You can accomplish this by doing a reverse image search of your favorite images at Berify.
At Berify, we help you catch image thieves and take action by requesting photo credit, your image removed, or even pursuing the matter legally. Your work takes time. Keep it safe, with Berify.
